If a breakfast smoothie is your thing, try substituting kefir for milk or juice. Kefir—as in the drink, not the man—is a milk-based product that comes in low-fat and nonfat varieties and is available at most grocery stores in the dairy section. It tastes similar to yogurt but comes with even more “good” bacteria. “The texture is smooth and slightly fizzy,” says registered dietitian Cheryl Forberg. Forberg purees a cup of kefir with a peeled, sliced kiwi, 2 tsp almond butter, ½ tsp vanilla extract, and ½ a very ripe banana that has been cut into 1-inch pieces and frozen for a 170-calorie smoothie. “This shake is delicious, and it’s a great way to get protein at breakfast,” she tells us.
