These days nothing sounds better than a few days spent lolling in warm turquoise water with a tall, cool drink. But, warns our dermatologist friend Dr. Jeannette Graf, you might enjoy your beverage more when you avoid garnishes like lime and celery. “These foods can cause sun sensitivity,” Graf says. “If you get their juice on your skin while you’re in the sun, it can cause pigmentation wherever the juice was.” Really? “Yes, I’ve seen it.”
Of course, Jeannette couldn’t hear “beach vacation” without offering another bit of advice: Slather on a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher that blocks UVA and UVB rays. “In addition to helping to prevent skin cancer, it’s the number one anti-aging product,” she tells us. More sunscreen, less drink decoration: check. But don’t ask us to give up the little paper umbrella.
